July 1, 2011 – United Piping Inc. (UPI) wins the highest award for phase II construction contractors in the U.S.<\/p>\n
At an awards dinner held May 4 in Houston, UPI was the only facility contractor to earn the Keystone Pipeline Vice Presidents’ Safety Award, a silver medal for outstanding safety accomplishments during the Keystone Pipeline Phase II construction in 2009\/2010.<\/p>\n
“We also received an Award of Excellence for our 2010 work from TransCanada\/ Keystone earlier in 2010,” said UPI President Bob Schoneberger of Keystone and its parent company TransCanada.<\/p>\n
“TransCanada was a new client of ours in 2010 and to say that I am proud of our recognition is an understatement,” Schoneberger said.<\/p>\n
UPI decreased its TRIR from 7.45 in 2007 to 1.62 in 2010, and its EMR from 1.44 in 2007 to 0.92 in 2010. By hiring a full-time safety director in 2008, UPI now has an in-depth orientation program to ensure all employees understand the necessary safety precautions to operate in the oil and gas industry.<\/p>\n
To further enhance its safety performance, UPI implemented many programs used by TransCanada.<\/p>\n
“We’ve developed, what I feel is a coaching-type atmosphere when it comes to safety,” said Michael Maruca, UPI safety director. “We’ve placed safety professionals out in the field with our safety crews to assist them with any questions or concerns.”<\/p>\n
This year, UPI has maintained a zero incident count and has nearly as many man-hours for 2011 as in 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
